2008 Dollar Store Market in a Quick Review

Ok, the industry numbers are finally out. Even though the retail market in general did not do well, shopping trips to dollar stores by customers INCREASED 4 percent as compared to other retailers according to Nielsen Co in the 3rd quarter of 2008. The suprising number is that the largest portion came from families with combined incomes of $68000 and more. Walmart is still working well for customers that stock on many items, and the dollar stores are appealing to shoppers who don’t want many items at a time. These people walk to the stores. They are handy and no large parking lots are involved.

More than one dollar $1 store Due to costs of goods being on the rise, there are now a variety of types for a dollar store. In summary for the future, they will be considered small stores where shoppers can buy well priced items some name brands, others generics.

The National Retail Federation does not consider chains such as Dollar General and Family Dollar true dollar stores because they sell many items for more than a dollar store.

But others such as Nielsen Co. and Consumers Union (publisher of Consumer Reports) mention Dollar General and Family Dollar as being in the dollar store category. The main chain typically referred to as a true dollar store, Dollar Tree, actually does sell all items for one dollar.

Dollar General sells about a third of its items for a dollar. Among those recently on the shelves: a rain poncho, a pack of generic paper napkins and a box of Sweetheart candy hearts.

“Our company pioneered the ‘everything is a dollar’ concept back in the ’50s, but we have evolved,” Dollar General spokeswoman Tawn Earnest wrote in an e-mail. So much so that Dollar General is in the grocery business. Some of its stores — called Dollar General Markets — sell meat and produce. Aimee Murray, 50, shops at a Dollar General Market in the Winter Park area for discount colas, cleaning products and cat treats.

“I never shopped these dollar stores before,” she said, until she retired and went on a fixed income.

So, get ready. Dollar Stores, 99 Cent stores, and Dollar Plus Stores are here to stay for some time !
