How is the the financial turmoil affecting dollar stores
and new store openings ?
These last 2 weeks have shown that the United States will have to drastically
make changes in regulating financial institutions, lending policies, and Wall
Street firms. In our industry we have been affected in many ways as dollar store
shoppers are picking and choosing what they buy very carefully and new dollar
store owners that are entering the market as new people in the business are
facing problems and roadblocks when trying to get a loan for their new dollar
store opening. The good news is that commercial real estate is welcoming dollar
stores all over the country and rents have become very competitive in areas were
leasing a location was out of the question until not too long ago. These cities
include upscale areas in Atlanta, GA, Phoenix AZ, cities in California and just
about everywhere in the country. Another good piece of news we are getting back
from stores are that upscale customers are flocking more and more the local
dollar store in search of good deals, and $1 price points in the what we call
the consumables and every day items such as cleaning products, snacks, paper
products, and others. To give an example, in the next weeks we will be building
a new dollar store in Riverview, IL for customer that will utilize 7400 square
feet of shopping area at his location. The dollar store will carry all
categories as mentioned above and a slew of wholesale household items,
housewares, kitchenware, party items, and also a dollar plus section on some of
the aisles with great deals in the $1 to $5 range. The dollar store business and
dollar store franchise will eventually evolve to what is called Dollar Plus. At
