Dollar Star USA a Dollar Store in Orlando Florida
Column by Michael Warshower
We are seeing more and more Dollar Stores now converting to
Dollar Plus Stores. This not only gives the dollar store owner a higher markup
price per product but it also gives the store owner the possibility of hitting
higher sales numbers. The concept would be to only mark products for more than a
dollar if and only if they are 75 cents or more per unit. Items that are 75
cents or less would still have to be strictly at the one dollar price as is sold
at Dollar Tree for example. This week we will be setting up a big store in the
Orlando, FL area which will be called Dollar Star USA. The owner is a Brazilian
born customer and his name is Marcelo Ferrari. This will hopefully be the first
of many dollar stores to be opened in the Orlando area and surrounding counties
as he has many interested investors that are also backing him up to build and
setup dollar stores and also dollar plus stores in the area. The location will
have a total of 9000 sq ft of shopping area and is due to open in the first week
of March 2008. The buildout crew of Buckstore Inc. is there now actually
starting the construction of the store. In this particular location, the
merchandise will include about 60% of dollar store consumable products from
various dollar store vendors from around the country. Most orders that were
shipped to the store are coming in FTL or Full Truck quantities. The consumables
alone will stand out very clearly as there are Cleaning products, Health and
Beauty items, Foods, and snacks that will be spread out through the store with
many brand name items such as Colgate, Lays, Heinz, etc. With all the
advertising and media involved for the grand opening we are hoping to have a
grand opening sales day of approximately $20,000 and hopefully $50,000 for the
first week of sales. Will this be possible in today's Dollar Store and Retail
Market conditions ? I personally think that due to Marcelo’s experience in
retail (he owns a supermarket chain in Brazil) this sales figure is possible
also considering the vast array of dollar store products that have brand names
which will be an instantaneous eye catcher with no doubt. We have sent our best
crew to the store also to complete the job in a way that the 99 cent items and
dollar items look clean, sparkling new, and attractive to every customer that
walks in the Orlando location.
